Sage has a clear herbal character with a camphoraceous edge: think aromatic leaves with a penetrating freshness rather than sweet flowers. It can feel fresh and warm at the same time. In a perfume, this character may sharpen citrus or give floral and woody notes a more herbaceous outline.
Common sage is Salvia officinalis. Its leaves yield an essential oil by steam distillation, and suppliers describe the oil as fresh, warm and strongly herbaceous. It is a different species from clary sage, Salvia sclarea, whose material has its own profile. A note labelled sage does not by itself confirm a particular oil or origin.
