PAPYRUS
Papyrus in perfume can suggest a crisp, dry woody texture. Byredo describes its papyrus note as clean and crisp within a warm woody composition, showing that the idea need not be damp or heavily smoky. It can offer a drier counterpoint to creamy woods or sweet amber notes, depending on how the perfume is built.
The name requires care. The papyrus plant is Cyperus papyrus, while cypriol oil is commonly sourced from the roots of the different species Cyperus scariosus. Similar names and appearances do not make their materials interchangeable. A perfume’s papyrus label does not prove that paper-making papyrus stems or roots were distilled, nor that cypriol is present. Treat it as the house’s scent description unless a specific material is identified.
