Puredistance Antonia: Archetypal Mother

???? “We choose not to zoom in on the ingredients. We rather leave the personality of this perfume ‘intact’. Just as a composition of Chopin needs not be divided into individual notes in order to be enjoyed.”

Puredistance Antonia was created in 2011, and it was the third fragrance in the brand collection after Puredistance I, the pure and innocent girly fragrance, and Puredistance M, a masculine leather dedicated to Bondiana and Aston Martin leather chairs. Jan Ewood Vos created Puredistance Antonia, thinking of his own mother Antonia, to whom he dedicated the fragrance. This personal dedication was one of the reasons why Jan did not disclose the notes of the fragrance: “We choose not to zoom in on the ingredients. We rather leave the personality of this perfume ‘intact’. Just as a composition of Chopin needs not be divided into individual notes in order to be enjoyed.”

“Created by Master Perfumer Annie Buzantian in New York, Puredistance ANTONIA is a highly original green floral with a great lushness and warmth of heart, but at the same time pillowy and gentle as can be. Key in the creation of ANTONIA is the image of a strong, positive, but at the same time gentle woman.

Is it really me? The photos go farther, from the past to the present, and in the photos the girl becomes a mother, a mature woman, and then a grandmother, acquiring that face and figure that we know today (and next to her we become ourselves, as we could see in the mirror every morning). Then we look again and again at the photos of her youth, trying to see her at our age now, to see our own features and character in her face.

The resinous green bitterness of galbanum resin, which makes up the Antonia start, is familiar to us from all of the green chypres, starting with Vent Vert Balmain and ending with the Viper Green Ex Nihilo. Perhaps, in the 50-60’s of the last century, galbanum symbolized youth, springtime, and innocence, but I now perceive it as a sign of life experience and an adult but full-of-energy type of person. Even despite the addition of violet leaves. A modern flower-aldehydic bouquet, chic and fragile, ideally executed, evokes the marble sculptures of mythical virgins and goddesses with perfect body proportions and flowing marble clothes — far from a banal vase with flowers.

The perfume is neither modern, nor old-fashioned. Puredistance ANTONIA is a timeless perfume with a feel of innocence, yet feminine and confident. She grabs you with gentleness and faithfully stays with you, tenacious, but never overwhelming.” (Information from the official website)

It is a green morning mist in the garden, the first buds in spring — not a blossoming garden that calls for pollinating insects. The cosmetic powdery chord of aldehydes, orris, and vetiver slightly powdering the flowers smells soft, warm, and velvety. Antonia’s thin and slightly noticeable woody-musky base is located on the opposite pole from the galbanum, as if taken from a different perfume. Of course, each will recall their own association of the “galbanum-violet-rose-jasmine-orris-vetiver” structure — either first love, or a friend with great taste, or an incredible fragrance on a stranger, or a sudden insight in a perfume shop.

???? Antonia is the perfume-mother, uniting in itself the severity of the teacher and the tenderness of the person who feels her kids as a part of herself. .

Antonia It seems to me that the Puredistance secret of success is based on archetypal perfume creations. Puredistance I is perfume-Cinderella, Puredistance M is perfume-Bond007, and Puredistance White is a really white perfume.

Antonia is the perfume-mother, uniting in itself the severity of the teacher and the tenderness of the person who feels her kids as a part of herself. It combines the tastes of our mothers: clean aldehydes, bitter greens of galbanum, lively and sweet tenderness of roses, seductive jasmine, orris powdery softness — all that beautiful and feminine stuff they wore in the 60-70’s.

The classic of the genre that was created by the efforts of the Guerlain, Chanel, Lancome, and Estee Lauder perfumers–and now in Antonia’s green flower bouquet–are the features of Fidji and Chamade, №5 and №19 Chanel, Vent Vert Balmain, and Safari Ralph Lauren. These were our mother’s favorite fragrances, and therefore became our beloved perfumes of which we used to steal a little drop. Of course, the secret of success is that the Puredistance perfumers manage to translate these archetypes into fragrances.
