Heir to a long line of cognac-makers, Kilian Hennessey launched his own namesake perfumery in 2007 with the ambition of not only reflecting his distinct personality, but also a firm belief in the supreme longevity of true luxury. For Kilian the art of fragrance making always has a narrative at its heart; be it the myth of original sin prominent in In The Garden of Good and Evil, or the progression of a love story in the debut collection, L’Oeuvre Noire. Now spanning across five fragrance collections, Kilian’s story-telling ethos and “eco-luxe” philosophy of beautiful keepsake, refillable bottles and wearable perfume jewellery has catapulted the unique fragrances into a much-coveted niche of haute perfumery.
Born from a desire to imbue make-up and skincare with the same luxury approach that fashion commands, By Terry was established in 1998 by make-up artist Terry de Gunzburg. Having spent 15 years as Creative Director at Yves Saint Laurent Beauté, where she created the cult classic Touche Éclat concealer pen, her eponymous beauty range is renowned for its distinct approach to colour, light and texture, even coining the term "haute couleur" for its bespoke colour creation service. Beloved for its light-reflecting, multipurpose products and honing a simple, straightforward approach to skincare, make-up and fragrance, beauty-expert favourites include the iconic Baume De Rose lip balm, perfecting Ombre Blackstar eyeshadow pencil, and a comprehensive collection of professional-quality foundations.
Born out of its founder Geza Schoen’s love for Iso E Super, a strange, cedar-ish and sometimes velvety aroma-molecule that doesn’t exist in nature, Escentric Molecules has pursued a unique and rebellious vision of fragrance since it released its first pair of soon-to-be-cult-favourite Iso E-intense perfumes in 2006. Escentric Molecules’ fragrances are neither classical nor straightforwardly pretty. Instead, the molecules at their hearts (chiefly Iso but others, like Javanol, too) are designed to meld, in the peculiar way of synthetic notes, with the wearer’s natural pheromones.
Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle is a publishing house for the industry’s very best Perfume Designers. Its goal is to push the limits of perfume creation and elevate perfumery to a whole new artistic level. As a perfume expert, Mr.Malle handpicks perfumers whose work is changing the face of the industry. As their editor, he guides them individually through their creative process to ensure that they are always transcending their limits. Together, they create works of art that represent the best of each olfactive category: the great classics of tomorrow.
Hermetica is a collection of molecular fragrances inspired by the ancient practice of alchemy, which sought to transform basic metals into precious materials and to find the ultimate elixir of life. Applying these practices to modern day perfume-making, Hermetica is based on the belief that finding the perfect perfume relies on the chemical connection between the molecules within a fragrance and one’s skin. In their quest for the ultimate perfume elixir, Hermetica founders John and Clara Molloy decided to create a revolutionary collection by not choosing between natural ingredients or synthetic molecules but using a combination of the two. This hybrid formula, using unique patented technology - Innoscent™ - and developed by Symrise, is a first-ever in the fragrance industry. The alcohol-free formula reveals immediately the heart of the fragrance.
Jean-Francois Lazartigue is one of the most renowned hair care specialists in France. He began his career as a hairdresser and opened his first salon in “Rue de Courcelles,” Paris, in December 1963. He has always been fascinated by hairdressing techniques and interested in hair's health. Facing an outstanding success, Mr. Lazartigue developed a number of prominent hair treatment centers in France where he offers a hair & scalp analysis. This computerized microscope determines a personalized prescription of treatments for each costumer. He was also the first to incorporate into hair care the same ingredients as in skin care (AHA, collagen, vitamins). Mr. Lazartigue’s philosophy has always been to select the best available ingredients and use them in high concentrations. All of them are tested in the J.F. Lazartigue laboratories in France as well as in his salons & treatment centers.
When Sergio Momo created Kemi perfumes he wanted to bring to life the ancient philosophical tradition of alchemy, whose practioners have claimed it to be the precursor of profound powers. Kemi fragrances are inspired by this philosophy, the conversion of raw matter to perfect purified form. Alchemy is an influential philosophical tradition whose practitioners have, from antiquity, claimed it to be the precursor to more profound. Perfume as we know it could not have taken shape without alchemy, the ancient art that undertook to convert raw matter into a perfect purified form. Greco - Roman Egypt, Islamic World and the Renaissance philosophers made a great contribution to alchemical research. The most influential author in this regard was Jabir in the VIII century. Kemi straddles the line between the tangible and the intangible, the earthly and the ethereal, the real and the magical.

The brains (and nose) behind Nasomatto is Alessandro Gualtieri, an Italian perfumer who has created scents for Versace, Valentino, Helmut Lang, Fendi, Diesel, and more. Gualtieri was educated in the art of perfumery in Germany and built a successful career working with artists, niche brands and major designers – but after being rejected more and more for his radical concepts, he decided to strike out on his own. Gualtieri established his Amsterdam-based brand in 2007 and called it Nasomatto (Italian for ‘crazy nose’). The first series of fragrances was released later that year: Hindu Grass, Duro, Narcotic Venus, Silver Musk, and Absinth. In the following years, several more scents joined the line-up: China White (2008), Black Afgano (2009), Nuda (2010), and Pardon (2011). The tenth and last scent, Blamage, was released in 2014 along with a film about its origins called The Nose – Searching for Blamage.
Orto Parisi is the new brainchild of Nasomatto‘s Alessandro Gualtieri who founded the theoretically separate, unrelated house in 2014. Boccanera and Stercus are part of the 5-piece collection, all of which follow Mr. Gualtieri’s manifesto to create over-sized, strong scents that represent “parts of our body,” as well as how our animalic side has been repressed by civilisation. I’ll look briefly at each of them in turn with a more generalised summation than my usual in-depth analysis. As founder and perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri notes, “The parts of the body that carry more smell are those where more soul is collected. The strong smells have become unpleasant to us, because the excess of soul is intolerable to the extent that our innate animalism is repressed and breaking from civilization. This project is my garden I have planted, fertilized, cultivated, and harvested. Orto Parisi states that our body is experienced like a garden, and its smells are a true mirror of our soul.”

The Different Company
For centuries, luxury has been synonymous with scarcity, quality, precision and inaccessibility. But little by little, it became popular, becoming more and more accessible and standardising the offer. The Different Company was born within this century, in a context where perfume lovers are turning away from the novelties of the big brands, which tend today to create juices intended to please the greatest number. Based on this observation, The Different Company’s first creations appeared, developed by Jean Claude Ellena and Thierry de Baschmakoff. Not imposing costs or codes limits, exploring new territories, demanding excellence in raw materials and sillages, working with talented perfumers of international renown, expressing a signature luxury design: this is the vision of The Luxury Perfumery of The Different Company.
