Ways to Love La Mer: Interview with Kate Hudson

Ways To Love La Mer: Interview With Kate Hudson📷 What works for me today is a holistic approach that encompasses taking care of my mind and body. And ultimately, real beauty is a reflection of feeling content.

How has your definition of beauty evolved over the years? What has contributed to this new perception? (For instance, maturity, motherhood, increased social consciousness, etc.)

My idea of beauty has definitely changed over the years. In my 20s, I didn’t think much about my body or my skin. I kind of just let it take care of itself. But, as I got older, I eventually came to understand how important it is to respect my body and take care of it. What works for me today is a holistic approach that encompasses taking care of my mind and body. And ultimately, real beauty is a reflection of feeling content. When you are fulfilling your passions—family, work, health, friends, creativity—it just makes you feel good inside and out. If the things I love and love doing the most are in balance, then it shows on my skin. Even beautiful makeup can’t mask one’s unhappiness or imbalances. Ultimately, it shows.

What are some of your earliest beauty memories? Is there a specific incident that made you realize its power?

One of my earliest beauty memories is sitting on my Mom’s lap as a little girl in the hair and makeup trailer on one of her movies watching Tom Case, the celebrated makeup artist, turn her into a character right out of the 1940s. I just remember how excited I was by the idea that makeup could transform someone and create an entirely different persona. I know that there is power in beauty, but prefer to think that the real power comes from a woman’s self-confidence.

What did your mother teach you about beauty? And how did La Mer, which she first shared with you when you were really young, fit into this philosophy?

The first quality skincare product I ever used happened to be Crème de la Mer. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado, which has a very dry climate. I learned from my Mom early on that skin changes as we get older, and is especially affected by climate, seasons and the stresses of life. I remember my Mom giving me Crème de la Mer as a Christmas present when I was just a teen. I immediately knew that it was a huge change from what I’d been using on my face, and was forever hooked.

You’ve been using La Mer for years. What initially drew you to the brand?

I love that La Mer is the one skincare product that you can just trust. It has always been a brand recommended by so many women in both my personal and professional life—whether my mom, makeup artists, beauty editors or my friends.

Walk us through your skincare routine.

I have finally nailed my skincare routine! First, and foremost, I like to stay hydrated. Drinking water is always on my mind. When it comes to cleansing, it’s easy to over-clean your skin and strip it of its natural moisture. So, when possible, I wash my face once a day, at night only, and—here’s a trick—I avoid using water! I love oil cleansers that you use on dry skin and pat off, like La Mer’s The Cleansing Oil. Then, I finish off with a toner or micellar water that gives me that extra clean, hydrated feeling. If cleansing in the morning, I use La Mer’s The Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream, usually followed by an antioxidant serum, and I always finish with sunscreen. I also believe in taking supplements for skin health. Fish oil is one supplement that’s not only good for your skin but great for your heart.

What do you keep on your nightstand?

A good book, a glass of water and La Mer’s The Renewal Oil.

Why did you choose to work with a female director on this campaign? Does the director’s work philosophy mirror your own?

Women supporting women in business is very important to me. There are so few women filmmakers that I always relish working with them when I have the opportunity. When I sat with the La Mer team to develop the campaign, we both felt it was important to bring a feminine point of view. And Loren Denis, a young, new filmmaker, takes it to another level—she has an edge and modernity to her. It was such a great collaboration.

Who knew that a moisturizer could have so many personalities! Which of the five textures is your favorite?

I love the new Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream. It has a light, cool consistency that soothes and calms my skin immediately, making it feel instantly soft and hydrated. And nothing makes my skin feel as nourished and happy as Crème de la Mer.

Tell us about shooting in Iceland. Do you have a connection to this beautifully dynamic country?

Wow, where do I begin? It’s an incredible, magical country. The landscapes are just awe-inspiring. It is very humbling to be immersed in Mother Nature and all of her elements. In some ways, it feels otherworldly, almost celestial. I spent an evening soaking in the Blue Lagoon and looked up to the sky and saw the Northern Lights in the distance. I felt transported to another realm. There are the most beautiful, soft, moss-covered hills that we hiked throughout. You have to be careful not to step on the moss, so we jumped from rock to rock—all that against the backdrop of the most majestic waterfalls, volcanos and mineral baths. It’s unlike anywhere I have ever traveled before.

What acting roles are you most drawn to? Why?

It depends on where I am in my life, but really I’m always just looking for interesting characters in a well-crafted story. That character could be in a comedy or a drama or a combination of both. But, I also love to be presented with a challenge, so I look for roles that will force me a bit out of my comfort zone and allow me to stretch as a person and an artist.

How do you balance all aspects of your womanhood—parenthood, business and staying true to yourself?

Most of the time, I fail at balancing just like everyone else! So, I just keep moving forward. I think women put a lot of pressure on themselves to not feel stress or not project it. I think it’s ok to sometimes feel overwhelmed or not in balance. That’s when you seek out your friends, family and support systems or finally take a moment to pause—even if it’s just to breathe deeply or meditate for a few minutes which can help bring about a fresh outlook or a renewed sense of calm.

What excites you professionally these days?

I am interested in and excited by all sorts of things other than filmmaking. That’s one of the reasons I founded Fabletics. I am passionate about good health and fitness, so starting a business that fuels that passion, and hopefully that of other women, just felt natural to me. It takes a lot of focus and discipline to balance more than one career path, but it gives me such a sense of purpose and joy to see something I’ve built come to life, whether it’s a new film, a book or a new brand.

Do you still enjoy acting or do you prefer the business side a little more than being on-screen?

I love it all. I have several different interests and passions and they all fulfill different parts of me. Acting, writing, music and dance are all creative passions that engage my right brain. Producing and business are interests that stimulate my left brain. I feel fortunate to have a career that allows me to integrate the creative with the intellect.

You have such a happy, upbeat vibe. Does this come naturally to you? Or do you work at it? Please share your tips!

I am generally a very positive person, but can easily be pulled in difference directions by children, work and other obligations. And although I do feel blessed in all areas of my life, I do think it’s equally important to find positivity from within. I do try to meditate every day and find time for myself when I can. But ultimately, the things that bring me the most joy are love, my family, my work, my friends and my home.
