A Closer Look: Hair Loss & J.F. Lazartigue’s Professional Solutions

📷 Normally, we shed between 50-100 hairs a day as part of the normal hair growth cycle. It is therefore perfectly normal to observe some hair loss on a daily basis.

To understand the phases of the growth cycle and how they relate to hair loss, it helps to start with the biology and anatomy of hair.

Hair anatomy

Hair strands are primarily made up of a protein called keratin and grow from hair follicles in the skin. At the base of each hair follicle is a living bulb. Inside the bulb, active cells divide and grow to create hair.

Blood vessels provide nourishment for the bulb and deliver hormones that impact hair growth. Like all the cells of our body, the hair follows a natural growth cycle: the hair cycle, which lasts from 2 to 6 years.

Normally, we shed between 50-100 hairs a day as part of the normal hair growth cycle. It is therefore perfectly normal to observe some hair loss on a daily basis.

The 4 phases of the hair cycle

Hair grows at an average rate of a quarter to half an inch per month. As your hair grows, individual strands randomly cycle through four ongoing phases: growing, transitioning, resting and shedding. Understanding the natural growth cycle of your hair helps explain how disruptions in the cycle can lead to hair loss.

Anagen (Growth Phase)
This is the active phase of hair growth. As many as 85-90% of the hairs on your head are growing at any given time, and each hair is in the growing phase for 2-6 years.

Catagen (Transitional Phase)
Over the course of 2 to 3 weeks, hair growth slows as follicles shrink and detach from the dermal papilla. The follicle is resting and preparing to renew itself. About 3% of all hairs are in the transitional phase at any one time.

Telogen (Resting Phase)
In this phase, the hair follicle is completely at rest and no longer growing. Around 10% to15% of all hair is in the resting phase at any given time. The resting phase typically spreads over a period of 3 months. Each hair follicle is independent and goes through the growth cycle at different times. These are the hairs we find daily on our brush, our clothes, etc, without having to worry about.

Exogen (Shedding Phase)
At the end of the resting phase, the hair will gradually detach from the follicle and fall out and a new bulb will form. This is the reason the average person, depending on the season, can shed between 50-100 hairs each day without cause for concern.

Once the hair falls, a new follicle in the anagen phase is formed and begins to develop. It's the birth of a new hair. Hair loss, hair thinning and problems with hair growth occur as a result of abnormal hair fall, due to a disruption in the growth cycle. This can be triggered by conditions such as metabolic imbalances, illness or improper nutrition.

The frequency and severity of hair loss increases with age for both men and women. It’s important to note that the last three phases (transitional, resting and shedding) combined take place over a period of approximately 3-4 months. That’s why it takes at least 3-4 months before you start to see results from any topical or supplemental treatments for hair loss.

Types of hair loss

1. Progressive hair loss

  • MEN: The hair begins to thin around the temples and forehead. Hair loss then becomes more severe, and the areas around the temple and forehead extend over the entire scalp.
  • WOMEN: The hair thins and gradually falls out around the central crown area.

Progressive hair loss is due to a hormonal or hereditary (genetic) factor. It occurs when the male hormone, testosterone, transforms into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that stiffens the collagen envelope. The collagen thickens, which compresses the hair. The hair thins from cycle to cycle and eventually falls out. Women are also affected by this hormonal change, because they also have testosterone. In women, androgenetic alopecia develops mainly during the perimenopause and menopause.

Progressive Hair Loss: 3-month treatment plan

Our expert program to treat progressive hair loss is recommended for at least 3 months and makes it possible to slow down and limit hair loss and to enhance the growth of weakened hair:

1. ACTIVATE MICRO-CIRCULATION with Stymulactine 21 Shampoo: this cleansing shampoo and the massage action during its application helps activate the micro-circulation of the scalp to promote the growth of weakened hair. 3 tubes are necessary for the recommended three-month treatment plan.

2. PROMOTE THE GROWTH OF WEAKENED HAIR with Stymulactine 21 Serum 4-6 times per week, to improve capillary density and decrease hair fall, contributing to a healthy scalp. 3 tubes are necessary for the recommended three-month treatment plan. Apply at different points for a good distribution of the product. Massage gently with your fingertips to stimulate micro-circulation. Do not rinse.

3. STRENGTHEN THE HAIR by taking 2 tablets daily of Revitalizing Hair Nutrients, rich in essential elements, to strengthen and revitalise the hair. 3 boxes are necessary for the recommended treatment plan.

Does NOT replace a varied and balanced diet.

2. Sudden or Reactive hair loss

Sudden and severe hair loss due to a particular event (pregnancy, fatigue, stress, illness, hormonal imbalance, etc.) or change of season. Reactive or sudden hair loss is characterised by rapid and severe hair loss. Particular events in our life (pregnancy, fatigue, stress, illness...) or change of season (especially in spring and autumn), can cause you to lose more hair than usual on the pillow, in the shower, on your hairbrush, etc.

Two main causes are: (1) Vascular - deficiency in microcirculation (2) Nutritional - decrease in nutrient intake
